Bugsy Malone
Huge thanks to all those involved in making this year’s school production of Bugsy Malone so successful. This production was particularly special as everything from the cast, orchestra, prop makers, set artwork, film editing and lighting was by the students making it a truly whole school effort.
Special mention to Alex Francis (Fat Sam), Paddy Benedict (Dandy Dan), Kate Lomas (Blousey), Charly Bacon (Tallulah) and Duncan Wilson (Bugsy Malone)

Annual Commendation Assemblies
All students in Years 7 to 10 have been involved in a series of Commendation Assemblies to celebrate their achievements since September. We are delighted to report that this year all students received at least one subject commendation and there were a large number who were commended by every one of their teachers. Each Year Group was entertained by some outstanding musical performances by their fellow students and we are also grateful to School Governors Jenny Hartless and Niall Smiddy who presented the certificates. A small number of students were also selected to receive the Headteacher’s special award for their particularly outstanding efforts.
We now look forward to the Annual Awards Evening in October when trophies will be presented to the very top performing students along with those who have excelled in other ways in this school year.

Bastille Day by Beth Finch
On the 14 July a small group of twelve students from Year 9 (Harry Lyons, Jake Clifford, Sam Plowright,Jai Dunlop, Alfie Cross, James Maxfield, Hayden Hann, Holly Nokes, Milo Pearson, Jonny Mead and Adam Tinsley) all performed at The Corsham Regis Primary School. The reason for this was that it was Bastille Day. Bastille Day is a celebration that commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution. All twelve of us volunteered to produce a short play explaining the French Revolution and the storming of The Bastille. The primary school students watched us perform in their morning assembly, and we hope that they enjoyed it. We prepared costumes and props throughout the week and practised our lines in French.
Congratulations to all 12 students who worked so well together to produce a very entertaining and informative piece of theatre. Also thank you to sixth form students Paul Cuthbertson and Emily Doherty-Smith for excellent stage direction.
Year 7 Trip to Boulogne by Jacob Harrow-Young, Kirsten Harris and Matt Draper C7
On 16 July we left school at 3am. We drove to the shuttle by coach which took 3 hours altogether. Then we drove on to the shuttle and we were on there for half an hour. When we got off we went to a big hypermarket and then to Nausicaa Aquarium. After that we went to the beach where we ate our lunch and ice-cream and played football. In the afternoon we walked up this big hill to the old town where we spent some more of our money and walked around. We arrived back at school at 9.30pm
Thanks to all staff who accompanied this trip Ms Hawkins, Ms Noyes, Ms Carter, Mr Tozer, Mr Evans and Mr Curtis.
People and Community Studies
On Wednesday 7th July, 8 year 10 students went to County hall in Trowbridge. We went there for a debating competition which was called ‘The Huge Health debate’. We all had a very good time and did exceedingly well which resulted in us winning as well as getting a huge swing in the popular vote from the audience after we delivered our debate. We couldn’t have done it without both Mr Bligh and Mr Balu and the following Year 10 students Mitchell Reynolds (W10),Rose White (W10), Laura Porto (W10), Julius Malin (S10), Jasmine Vincent (A10 ),Celina Dalecka ( M10), Grace Fudge ( H10) and of course Jarno Wolfe (W10) who unfortunately could not join us on the day.
Year 7 fundraising
Alex Garrett and Ben Musson held a cake sale for a friend of theirs called Adam who was diagnosed with High-Risk Neuroblastoma on 24 July 2009. This is an infancy cancer that affects the bone marrow and causes tumors in the abdomen.They wished to raise money to help send Adam to America for a new treatment only available there. With the help of many Year 7s who baked the cakes, the boys cake sale was very successful and in total they raised £100.
Food
The A Level Food Technology students spent an interesting and informative day at Bath Spa University on Wednesday 30 June.The purpose of the day was to raise their awareness of current issues related to food and nutrition. The presentations were given by students both past and present and some of the university lecturers. Topics included, Smart Packaging, Cells,Weight Management Requires Man Management and Nutrition and Health. The students were also given a tour of the campus. An excellent day all round.
Pig & Jig event
The event itself was a great success with one of the biggest attendances. The weather was beautiful, the food was plenty and the bands were fantastic. The event started with the ‘Electric Lobsters’ who encouraged people young and old to barn dance followed by the ‘Corinthians Casuals’ a fantastic rock group. The money raised from the event is given to local charities the main one being the school, this year we are also supporting Dorothy House and A Duke of Edinburgh scheme. So a big thank you to all that attended this year and make sure you put next years date in your diary (2 July).We hope to see you there. Maths
It is the end of another fantastic year for Problem of the Term!
This year’s overall winners are: Year 7 Joy Wingrave, Year 8 Hannah Lias and Year 9 Amelia Lias. There will also be winners from each class so look out for the prizes which will be given out in class by your maths teacher.

Year 8 Iceland Trip
23 students in Year 8 have signed up for a World Challenge expedition to Iceland in July 2011. They have the challenge of raising £1,400 each before setting off for the land of fire and ice next year. The trekking will go past mountains, glaciers, geysers and of course volcanoes.Over the next few months the students will be holding several events for their fundraising. You can help with their fundraising by visiting www.easyfundraising.co.uk This is a website where you can shop online at many different shops. At the same time you will be donating to us without paying any extra money as the shop you buy from gives a small percentage to us.

Primary Maths Challenge
40 students from local primary schools took part in this years Primary Maths Team Challenge. It was a closely fought contest as teams of four solved lots of mathematical problems.
In first place was a team from Corsham Primary, second Neston Primary and third another team from Corsham Primary.

Making the Fibonacci sequence
As part of our second specialism in Maths we offer an annual enrichment event to AGT students from other schools in Wiltshire. This year, 12 year 10 students from Sheldon, Lavington and John of Guant attended.
They spent the morning in the Making Room with the brief to make a mobile to represent the Fibonacci sequence. Many mathematical surprises were found along the way, not least that the balance points for the bars of the mobile was very close to the golden ratio.

Outreach Art from The Making Room
1. Some of the finished projects from the MOD community centre makeover- the map is magnetic, so the children can chart their friends and relations around the world; and the Tree of Hands was made at the request of the youth club members, to be added to as people come and go.
2. Corsham in Bloom peacocks – our peacock planters, made during Artclub/Family Learning sessions, are now in full bloom around Corsham, and Mazy Bartlett and Anna Mackie meet the judges on 19th July, to tell them how the project progressed. They have prepared a display for the Town Hall visit, which will hopefully stay put for a bit, allowing everyone a chance to look.
3. Art Surgery has been as lively and productive as ever this term- we had two construction projects running side by side, helped out by the donation of interior design samples from a Corsham shop.
Initially a group of girls started building a dream home, with psychedelic spiral stairs, wrought iron gates and a rooftop pool- spurred on by their project, a group of boys sprang into action , making their own modernist prototype home. This was all self-initiated work, and both projects are going home for the holidays and continuing construction!
We have also made flags, inspired by the football, and a kind donation of piles of fabric from a flag company; we have a small cottage industry as some of the Corsham Primary students choose to churn out elaborate greetings cards every week; Mazy Bartlett helped someone to sew a backdrop for their band, using balloon material, and glass-painted panels for Mr Holgate are an ongoing project.
4. At Springfields school Mazy Bartlett and artist Emma Williams have been making banners with the boys. Despite none of the 8 students having had any sewing experience, they focused on the project, and have made amazing progress over the course of 3 sessions. Their school is twinned with a Chinese school, so the boys designed their pieces using Chinese decorative art as an inspiration – they then transferred these designs to fabric, and cut and sewed each one. They also managed to squeeze in a one-off session with a ceramics artist, and managed not only to make panels showing the sports they do in their school(these will be cast in concrete) but also wonderful decorative pieces for themselves, which are being fired by the artist. All in all the work was of a really high standard, and everyone involved got a great deal out of the projects.
5. Finally, another sculpture in the series ’RE’ is ready to go up. This piece took a little time to do, as the ASDAN students involved wanted a windpower involvement, which took a bit of research; however eventually some wind powered lights were sourced allowing the sculpture to be put together. It illustrates the slogan RETHINK, concerning our environment, and you will be able to spot it in our school quadrangle sometime soon!

Pottery with Sarah Purvey
Corsham School and Bath Spa University have been working together in partnership to share resources and expertise this year.
Sarah Purvey taught pottery to a small group of year 8 students at Corsham Court.
Other groups to benefit from this link have been year 13 A level Art students who have gained places on Foundation courses in Art and Design at Bath College or Trowbridge College for the next academic year.
This group spent two days at Corsham Court where they were taught ceramics and life drawing. Both groups really enjoyed the classes and felt the whole experience to be interesting and very beneficial.

Fundraising for Well Child

Year 9 (led by tutor group O9) has been raising money for their Year Group charity, Well Child.
Their logo is a handprint, so we decided to challenge ourselves to collect as many coins as we could to lay out on a giant handprint and completely cover it.
We managed this challenge, and raised £66 as a result! We did this during the Year 9 fete at the end of last term.
